Will Anyone Go To Hotels Now?

The tourism sector, which provides over 3 crore jobs has gone completely bust ever since the Corona lockdown has been imposed. The sector, which was expecting a massive inflow of the tourists and was preparing for the summer vacation season, is among the worst hit sectors of economy due to the lockdown.

At least 53000 star hotels and over 5 lakh restaurants and mid-level hotels, not to speak of the countless eat-streets and wayside tiffin centres have been closed since March 23. As a result, the sector has incurred a loss of at least 5 lakh crore. The Telangana Chamber of Commerce and Industry says that a large number of the workforce has left for their native states and districts and even when the sector opens , it would take quite some time for all the employees to come back and report to duties. Even if the hotels and restaurants open, the customer footfall will be very low at least for the coming one year. The present hotel occupancy is less than 10 per cent. This means the hotels are forced to spend heavily on maintaining the infrastructure but are getting no income.

Many hotels are passing through extremely difficult times as they are still forced to pay rents and feed the employees who are still in the hotels and could not go to their homes and villages due to the lockdown. Hotel industry sources say that at least 40 per cent of the hotels might not open after the lifting of the lockdown.
