A group of close to 80 women activists entered the famous Haji Ali dargah, which was built in 1431, in Mumbai on Tuesday after putting a brave fight for five years.

Post June 2012, Women were barred from entering sanctum sanctorum comprising the grave of Muslim saint Sayeed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. This decision was challenged in the courts in 2014 by BMMA. Petitioners received a favorable judgment on August 26th this year. The court ordered the trust not to discriminate between Men and Women apart from granting entry for females. Then, The Trust challenged the order in the Supreme Court. On October 24th, The Apex Court maintained men and women should be given equal access.

Following the setback, Trustees sought one month time to make necessary renovations to accommodate the women. Yesterday, Several women reached the durgah to offer prayers for peace and seek divine blessings.

However, One of the Trustees of the dargah told separate entries for men and women have been devised. In addition, None will be allowed to touch the peer's tomb.
