$1.5 Billion offered to India for building Toilets
By: Tupaki Desk | 17 Dec 2015 1:19 PM GMTTaking note of the fact that crores of people don't have access to toilets, The World Bank approved a loan of $1.5 billion to India for a period of five years. Its a major step towards eradication of open defecation in the country by 2019.
As per the statistics, Over 750 million people in the country continue the practice of open defecation due to lack of toilets. Most of these people (around 500 million) live in the rural villages and poor sanitation is mostly witnessed in low-income households. Open Defecation leads to rise of diarrhea, infections and other health related issues.
Onno Ruhl who is World Bank's Country Director for India says one in every 10 deaths in India is result of poor sanitation. Informing that World bank's loan will strengthen GoI's Swachh Bharat initiative, He expressed confidence over seeing a vast change towards improvement of sanitation within a period of five years from now.
