Lions are famous for their majestic and royal look and are part of the big cat family. They also play a big role in balancing biodiversity.
On the occasion of World Lion Day let us know some lesser known facts about lions. They are known for their adapting skills. They can adapt to any place, be it dense forest or deserts.
Lions roam in packs and the male lion leads the pack. However as far as the hunting is concerned, the females take active part in hunting.
Lions prefer grasslands and plains as their habitats and they hunt as a pack. While a lion targets or scares the target, the other lions hunt the set target.
The major concern about the lions is that it's population has been decreasing gradually over the years. It is the same for almost every country.
Earlier, lions used to be in Africa, Asia and Europe. However, with the massive decline in the population, the lions are majority restricted to Africa currently.
There are some factors that are working against the lions like hunting, and modernisation. As a result the habitats of lions are being under danger which also makes the population of the creatures reduced.
One more big problem faced by the lions in the areas that are close to the forest lands is the farmers and people who raise cattle attack the lion if it kills the cattle.
Seeing the situation, the great initiative of celebrating World Lion Day was started in 2013. The main agenda for starting the initiative is to spread awareness on the big cats and highlight the measures that have to be taken to increase the population.
The official data says the lion population across the globe is close to around 20,000 which is a big problematic issue.
India is doing its part to increase the population of lions by making the Gir National Park in Gujarat as its habitat which enjoys a good amount of lion population. The National Park is the home for the Asiatic lions.
As today is dedicated to lions, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate those who took part in lion conservation.
"The lion is majestic and courageous. India is proud to be home to the Asiatic Lion. On World Lion Day, I convey my greetings to all those passionate about lion conservation. It would make you happy that the last few years have seen a steady increase in India’s lion population," he tweeted.
