Yeddyurappa Proves He Is The Winner: BJP Leads In 9 Seats

The BJP can breathe a sigh of relief as the early trends in Karnataka bypoll indicate that the party is all set to win in at least nine assembly seats out of the 15 for which the bypolls were held. This means the Yeddiyurappa government has no immediate threat to its survival. The BJP needs to win at least six seats to remain in power. According to the trends, the party is leading comfortably in Athani, Kagwad, Gokak, Yellapur, Hirekerur, Ranibennur, Vijayanagara, Chikkaballapur and Mahalakshmi Layout. The Congress is leading in the Shivajinagar and Hunasuru seats. The JD(S) is leading in Krishnarajapete and Yeshvanthapura constituencies.

The bypoll results also prove that the grand oldman of Karnataka politics, Yeddiyurappa is still very strong and that he is a powerful vote catcher despite being over 75 years of age. Yeddiyurappa was so confident of the result that he had relaxed a day before the actual campaign ended and kept to himself at his residence. This also could mean that the Modi Government might not touch him after the election results.

The elections were held on December 5. The bypolls weres necessitated after 15 rebel MLAs from the Congress and JD(S) parties defected to the BJP in July. This was engineered to bring down the HD Kumaraswamy led coalition government. The MLAs were subsequently suspended from the House, but were allowed to contest the bypolls. Two more seats - Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Maski — remain vacant as separate election petitions challenging the results of the 2018 elections are still pending in the Karnataka High Court.
