American Wants To Cook Food In Jail: What Will India Say?

Generally, jails are regarded as corrective facilities that have strict regulations and conditions that must be followed by all the inmates without fail. There are certain exemptions for VIP inmates, and this is at the jurisdiction of the court.

Now we have the case of an American individual who has started to face the consequences of Indian jail authorities and is requesting for additional permissions.

According to the latest development, Matthew Aaron VanDyke, an American national in judicial custody in an NIA terror recruitment case, has moved a Delhi court seeking permission to prepare his own American-style meals.

According to his plea, Tihar Jail's food is "too spicy and oily," and he claims he has struggled to eat it for over 50 days, resulting in health issues. He made it clear to the court that he is unable to bear the food that is being served to him inside Tihar Jail in Delhi.

The court is expected to seek responses from the Tihar Jail administration and the NIA before deciding on the request.

This is an extremely complex scenario, and the Indian judiciary system is expected to deliver an interesting verdict on the same. In the meanwhile, there is the opposition discussion that permitting inmates to cook their own food, using stove and utensils in jail can be extremely dangerous.

So it has to be seen what kind of judgement that the Delhi jail would be issuing in this case, as there is a matter of international consequence as the inmate here is an American citizen.
