Anna canteen is a flagship program of the grand old Telugu Desam Party to provide food to the poor. Under this food is provided to people for just Rs 5. The party set up many Anna Canteens across the state. However the canteens were shut by the previous government.

The previous government closed the Anna Canteens and the TDP leaders moved the Court. Only a few canteens were run in the last tenure and they are also said to have faced a lot of issues.

During the campaign the TDP said that it would reopen Anna Canteens in the state so that the food can be provided. Now it is said that a date is fixed for reopening the Anna Canteens.

As per the media reports the Anna Canteens might be reopened on the 15th of August. However only a limited number of canteens might be reopened. Reports say that the canteens would be reopened in a phased manner.

These canteens were shut for five years and there was no proper Maintenance as well. It is said that the majority of canteens are not even in a good shape and they need a repair.

The work is underway to restore the Anna Canteens. As some of them were restored which are in a good shape they might be reopened in the first phase. Once the repair is done the rest of the canteens might be restored soon. It is said that the costs of the repairs would be around Rs 20 cr.

The canteens would be run by those who get the bidding. Earlier ISKCON ran the canteens. However there is no information on who might get the contract this time. The last date of the bidding will end soon and the government will pick a name from them.
