Due to its poor performance, the Pakistan team was shown the exit door for the 2023 World Cup tournament. Out of nine matches played in the league stage Pakistan just won four matches and lost five. The team looked strong before facing India. After India defeated it, Pakistan could not recover. Pakistan is in fifth place on the table with a -0.19 net run rate.

Not happy with the performance, fans are blasting the players on social media. Adding fuel to this, the senior players are slamming the team. While one former player said that the team has no respect and love for Cricket, another player said that the players lack fitness. Compared to other players Babar Azam was targeted massively.

The Pakistan Cricket Board faced severe criticism. Following this it was reported that the board might take a crucial decision and the skipper will be removed as part of that. Amid this Babar Azam decided to step down as the captain. However, there is no clarity on whether he stepped down taking the blame for the team's poor performance or whether his resignation was part of the measures.

Taking to social media Babar Azam announced his decision to step down as skipper. He said that he is leaving captaincy across the platforms. However, Babar Azam said that he will continue as the player in three formats of the game.

Pakistan fans could not digest the fact that Babar Azam could not produce at least one good innings in the World Cup. Babar Azam said he was asked by the PCB to take up captaincy in 2019 and during his stint as the captain he faced many ups and downs on and off the field.

Saying that he aimed to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world, Babar Azam said he gave his best in this regard. He credited his fellow players, coaches, and management for becoming the number one batsman in ODIs. Babar Azam thanked the Pakistan fans for their unwavering support.

Taking responsibility for the team's poor performance Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy. With this, Shan Masood was appointed as the Test captain while Shaheen Afridi was appointed as the T20 skipper.
