What Is Delhi Services Bill And Its Impact On Delhi Govt?

The Bharatiya Janata Party completed nine years in power at the Centre. During the same, the party expanded its reach in various regions including the northeast. The party also passed many controversial and much-talked-about bills. Another bill joined the list with the Delhi Services Bill which was recently passed in the Rajya Sabha.

No words can describe the uproar the bills caused. As the bill would make the Delhi government powerless, AAP tried its best in gathering support from various concerns, and all the parties which are against the BJP came together to oppose the bill. However, the support fell short and by a small margin. We can understand the intensity of the bill as many parties came together to oppose it.

The bill aims at giving total control to the Centre on the national capital Delhi more than the Delhi government. The government will not have any control over the postings and transfers of the officials. The government can only make suggestions and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor will take a call on this.

Keeping things in simple terms, the government in Delhi will not have any control over the departments as it happens with the states. Only the Centre gets control over the departments. No words can describe the pain of an elected government to see the things run by other governments in its territory.

Many say that the bill is the result of the growing tussle between the BJP and AAP. While the BJP rose to super success with the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, AAP surprised everyone by winning the 2015 elections in the national capital. However, things didn't go well between the parties and they started seeing issues. Earlier, we have seen how the Delhi government and the Delhi LG are at loggerheads. Both parties targeted each other over the Delhi liquor scam as well.

Recently, the Supreme Court gave a big relief to the Delhi government on the exercise of power and said that the elected government should have control. However, the Centre brought an ordinance on this to change this. Now the bill was passed in both houses. Once the bill gets effective, then the Delhi government will lose control of many aspects.
