Canada has quickly emerged as one of the leading destinations for the Indian population after the United States has started to crack down on the visa policy. In this context, even Canada has started to modify its citizenship policy and let us have a look into the same.

Canada has announced important changes to its citizenship rules, bringing relief to many families living abroad. The new amendments mainly focus on citizenship by descent, which earlier had strict limits.

Previously, Canadian citizenship could be passed only to the first generation born outside Canada. Because of this rule, many children and grandchildren of Canadian citizens were denied automatic citizenship, even though their families had strong ties to the country.

With the latest changes, this restriction has been relaxed. People who were earlier excluded because of the first generation rule may now become eligible for Canadian citizenship.

The government has also introduced a new condition to maintain a genuine connection with Canada. Canadian parents who were themselves born abroad can now pass citizenship to their children if they have lived in Canada for at least three years before the child’s birth or adoption.

These reforms aim to correct long standing legal and emotional hardships faced by Canadian families overseas. The move follows court rulings that found the old law to be unfair and unconstitutional. By updating the citizenship framework, Canada is trying to balance inclusiveness with national connection.

Overall, these changes strengthen family unity, recognize global Canadian communities, and modernize the country’s citizenship laws to reflect today’s realities.
