By: Tupaki Desk | 11 Sept 2025 11:11 PM ISTThe Canadian international visa issuance policy has taken a significant plunge down and it directly affects the Indian community. In 2025, Canada has made it tougher for international students, especially Indians, to get study visas. Reports say the overall rejection rate for student visas has reached a record 62%, compared to about 52% in 2024.
For Indian applicants, the situation is worse, with almost 80% of student visa applications reportedly being rejected.
This decline is also visible in the numbers. In the first three months of 2025, Canada issued only around 30,600 study permits to Indian students, compared to more than 44,000 in early 2024 a drop of about 31%.
The government has also capped the total number of international study permits at 437,000 for 2025, which is lower than last year.
Another big change is the increase in financial proof requirements. From September 1, 2025, a single applicant must show at least CAD $22,895 (about ₹14 lakh) in living expenses. For families, the required amount is much higher.
Visa rejections are often due to weak financial documents, incomplete applications, or doubts about the applicant’s intent to return home after studies. With stricter rules and higher financial demands, Indian students now face more challenges in fulfilling their Canadian education dreams.
