Heavy rains overnight in central Texas led to severe flash flooding, resulting in at least 24 fatalities. More than 20 children from summer camps along the Guadalupe River are missing, according to authorities. The National Weather Service issued an upgraded flash flood warning around 4 a.m. local time, alerting residents and campers of the dangerous conditions.

The Guadalupe River's water level in Kerr County dramatically rose from 7.5 feet to nearly 30 feet overnight. It is anticipated to reach 34 feet in Spring Branch by Friday afternoon. Videos online depict cars, campers, and mobile homes being swept away by the river's surge.

Efforts to Locate Missing Children

At Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls, approximately "23" children remain unaccounted for, as stated by Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick during a news conference on Friday. The camp accommodates around 750 children, according to Xinhua news agency.

In response to the crisis, at least 14 helicopters and 12 drones have been deployed. Over 500 people are actively searching around the camp area. Multiple adults and children have already been rescued from trees nearby.

Casualties and Rescue Operations

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha reported that at least 13 individuals lost their lives due to the intense flooding in the county. Several others are still missing. Leitha anticipates more fatalities will be confirmed as rescue efforts continue.

"We are still actively trying to find those that are out and those that are needing assistance," said Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice. The search operations remain ongoing as authorities strive to locate missing persons.

Statewide Response and Warnings

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on X that all available resources are being mobilised to address the flooding situation. "The immediate priority is saving lives," he emphasised. As of Friday afternoon, over half a million residents in central Texas were under flash flood warnings.

The National Weather Service warned of a "large and deadly flood wave" moving down the Guadalupe River. This prompted wireless emergency alerts to be sent to cell phones of residents and campers along the river.
