What Is CAA? Which Is In News With Centre's Announcement?

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP created a sensation by notifying the CAA. The Union Government made the controversial proposal into reality. Since earlier today there is a big buzz that a big announcement might come from the Union Government on the CAA.

The political heat in the country increased at once with the announcement. The opposition parties already started attacking the BJP and dubbing the proposal an act to get votes. A few non-BJP-ruled states already announced that they will not implement the CAA.

As so much is being talked about this let us get into the details of CAA. The proposal was made in 2019 to grant Indian citizenship to minorities who were persecuted in the neighboring countries.

Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan can get Indian citizenship. The parameter for this is that they should have come to India before December 31, 2014.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was announced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955 which has a few guidelines to get citizenship. By replacing it the CAA was announced.

As the Non-Muslim minorities coming from other countries are given citizenship we are seeing objections from experts and a few communities that they might be targeted with this. This is the first time religion is used as a parameter to grant citizenship.

When CAA was announced widespread protests were held across the nation. The national capital Delhi saw intense protests opposing this. A few celebrities also joined the protests. There was no development on the scheme from the BJP for a few years.

Many felt that BJP might take a backstep as happened with the farm bills. But the BJP was adamant about this. Recently Amit Shah said that the CAA would be implemented, and the Centre announced the same.
