Dasara, one of India's major festivals, is just a few hours away. However, the excitement and celebrations that once marked the festival seem to be missing this year. Markets appear quieter, and people seem less enthusiastic about the festivities. In both Telugu states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the festive mood is noticeably lower compared to last year.

Andhra Pradesh: Local Elections Take Centre Stage

The impact of local body elections is being felt across Andhra Pradesh. The State Election Commission released its notification just as the festive season was beginning, shifting public attention towards the elections.

A similar situation can be seen in several districts. Traditionally, Dasara celebrations in rural areas would continue for around ten days, with local games, gatherings and homemade festive dishes. This year, however, rising prices have discouraged many families from preparing special foods. Prices of cooking oil, pulses and other essential items have increased, adding to the financial burden on households.

Election-related rivalries have also created divisions in villages, affecting local gatherings and celebrations. As a result, many people appear to be observing the festival on a much smaller scale.

Telangana: Festive Spirit Takes a Hit

In Telangana, Bathukamma celebrations are taking place, but the festive atmosphere appears to be limited to certain areas.

The effects of El Niño and drought conditions have reportedly added to farmers' difficulties. With fewer work opportunities, many labourers are migrating in search of employment. Rising prices have further affected household spending.

Except for some urban centres such as Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar, the festive buzz appears to be subdued in several areas. Government-organised celebrations have also failed to generate much excitement. Consequently, Dasara and Bathukamma are being celebrated on a relatively modest scale in parts of the state.

Across India: Rising Costs and Other Concerns

Across the country, public attention has also been drawn to protests against the Election Commission and developments in states where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is underway.

At the same time, rising prices continue to put pressure on household budgets. Recent stock market fluctuations and economic uncertainty have added to concerns among sections of the public. Tensions in West Asia are another factor affecting the broader economic outlook.

A recent survey conducted by ASSOCHAM reportedly found that Dasara has increasingly become limited to advertisements and holidays, with celebrations losing some of their traditional appeal. The impact of tensions in West Asia was also highlighted.

Overall, this year's Dasara appears to be quieter than usual, with rising living costs, election-related developments and economic concerns affecting the festive mood in several parts of the country.
