United States President Donald Trump has been using the tariff system to regulate the ties with India and he is back on the job again now. He has warned about a new round of tariffs that could work against India.US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to India over its continued purchase of Russian oil, stating that the United States could consider increasing tariffs on Indian goods if concerns are not addressed. Speaking to reporters, Trump linked India’s energy trade with Russia to broader geopolitical tensions arising from the Ukraine conflict.

Trump said that while he shares a good personal rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and considers him a strong leader, the US is unhappy with India’s growing oil imports from Russia. He noted that such trade indirectly supports Moscow at a time when Western nations are trying to economically isolate Russia through sanctions. According to Trump, countries benefiting from discounted Russian oil should also take responsibility for helping bring the conflict to an end.

India has consistently maintained that its oil purchases are driven by national interest and energy security. Indian officials have argued that Europe continues to buy Russian energy in different forms and that India is only filling the gap left by reduced Western demand. India has also stressed that its stance is independent and based on protecting its economy and consumers.

The warning on tariffs is seen as part of Trump’s tough trade posture, especially during election season. Any move to raise tariffs could impact Indian exports to the US, adding pressure to an already complex trade and diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
