By: Tupaki Desk | 24 April 2024 1:20 PM GMTIndia is the biggest democracy in the world and is no wonder that the world is looking at us as the Lok Sabha elections are due. 2024 is a big year for the elections as a few countries including India will face the elections. The elections in India are underway.
We can understand the importance of votes in a democracy as voters can decide whom to vote for. If the voters are not happy with any of the candidates then they can go for NOTA. Over the years the votes polled for NOTA have been increasing gradually.
Going by the orders of the Supreme Court, the NOTA was introduced. The Election Commission created a space for "None of the above" (NOTA) in the 2013 elections in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and the national capital Delhi.
Since then we have been seeing NOTA in the voting machines. As people are voting under NOTA when they are not in favour of any candidate who is in the election race, many have the doubt about what happens when NOTA gets the most votes.
When NOTA gets the most number of votes then it is an indication that the voters are not happy with any candidate. In one such case, the Election Commission gave orders for re-election.
Going back to 2018, Maharashtra went for the Local body polls. But NOTA got the most number of votes than the candidates. With the candidates getting fewer seats than NOTA, the election body called for another election. However, the same result was recorded. With this, the candidate who got the second-highest votes after NOTA was declared a winner.
