Does Social Media Also Have Gender?
Social media platforms are generally created for everyone, but a recent comment by Elon Musk has started a fresh debate about whether some platforms are being viewed as belonging to a particular gender.

Musk recently called Instagram a platform “for girls” while responding to an X user who said he had deleted Instagram. The comment quickly attracted attention online, with several people questioning whether social media platforms should be associated with gender.
The discussion began after an X user announced that he had deleted Instagram and described it as an “inherently female app.” Musk responded to the post by saying, “Instagram is for girls.”
This is not the first time Musk has made a similar comment. Earlier in May this year, he also described Instagram as being for girls while responding to a discussion about social media habits.
At that time, the conversation focused on some common Instagram activities, such as sharing frequent stories, posting photographs, uploading food pictures and other lifestyle content. Musk's comments about men sharing their Instagram profiles with him also attracted criticism.
His latest remark has again created a debate on social media. Some users accused him of making a sexist comment, while others treated it as a personal opinion about the type of content commonly seen on Instagram.
Several users also questioned the statement by pointing out that X, the platform owned by Musk, is also used by people of all genders.
One user asked, “X is for who?” Another questioned the difference between the two platforms. Some users directly disagreed with Musk and said Instagram is a platform for everyone.
The debate also raises a larger question: Does social media really have a gender? Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms are used by millions of people across different age groups and genders. While certain types of content may become more popular among particular groups, that does not mean a platform officially belongs to one gender.
Social media has also changed greatly over the years. Instagram is now used for entertainment, business, education, news, fashion, sports, food, travel and personal communication.
Musk's latest comment has therefore started a wider conversation about gender stereotypes on social media.
