The work permit visa in the United States is one of the most decided documentation for the Indian community, but things are not looking straightforward in the future.

Recent reports show that U.S. visa interviews for popular categories like F-1 student visas, H-1B work visas, and B-1/B-2 visitor visas are often much shorter than most applicants expect in many cases just a minute or two long.

The real reason isn’t that officers are being careless, but because most of the important decision-making now happens before the interview begins.

Before you even sit down at the embassy window, consular officers have already reviewed your DS-160 application form, background information, travel history, employment details, prior visa refusals, and increasingly your social media profiles.

This data is used to assess your eligibility long before the face-to-face part starts, so by the time you are asked questions your outcome approval or refusal is often mostly decided already.

Because of these pre-screening trends and heavier background checks, short interviews are becoming normal. Many applicants experience approvals in as little as two to three minutes, and refusals sometimes happen in under a minute.

What matters most is that your interview responses are consistent with what you wrote on your DS-160, rather than focusing on confidence or body language during the short interview itself.

In this environment, accurate and complete applications matter far more than the few minutes you spend at the consular window.
