A new study by ticketing platform Fandango has delivered encouraging news for the global cinema industry, revealing that Generation Z is now at the forefront of theatre attendance growth, overturning the widely held assumption that younger audiences had permanently migrated to streaming platforms and social media.
The survey, conducted across more than 7,000 adults in the United States, found that 87 percent of Gen Z respondents watched at least one film in theatres over the past year. That figure significantly outpaces Gen X at 70 percent and baby boomers at 58 percent, painting a picture of a generation far more engaged with the theatrical experience than many had predicted.
Beyond mere attendance, Gen Z is also spending more per visit, gravitating toward premium formats such as IMAX and allocating more on food and beverages, which is translating into healthier per visit revenue for theatre operators.
Fandango executive vice president Jerramy Hainline addressed the shift directly, stating that the narrative of Gen Z being disengaged from cinemas does not hold up against the data.
He noted that their participation in theatrical moviegoing is not only sustained but actively growing, and that for this generation, the cinema serves as a social destination as much as an entertainment venue.
