By: Tupaki Desk | 5 March 2026 3:23 PM ISTThe dating culture in the current generation has become a major concern as people have been finding new ways in order to question the basic foundation of a strong relationship.
Now, Ghostlighting is a new toxic dating trend that combines two harmful behaviours called ghosting and gaslighting. In simple terms, it means someone disappears from your life and then manipulates you into thinking the problem was your fault.
In normal ghosting, a person suddenly stops replying to messages or calls without giving any explanation. The relationship ends with silence. However, ghostlighting goes a step further.
The person first creates confusion by saying things like “You are overreacting” or “You are imagining things,” making you doubt your feelings. After that, they disappear completely.
Sometimes the same person may return later and act as if nothing happened. When the victim asks about their disappearance, the ghostlighter may blame them or deny the past situation. This behaviour manipulates the other person emotionally and makes them question their memory and judgement.
Experts say ghostlighting can be more damaging than ghosting because it attacks a person’s confidence and self worth. It creates confusion, self doubt, and emotional stress. Many people start blaming themselves for the relationship ending even though they were not responsible.
Warning signs include inconsistent communication, frequent excuses, and blame shifting. Relationship experts advise people to trust their instincts, set clear boundaries, and avoid partners who refuse to take responsibility for their behaviour. Healthy relationships depend on honesty, respect, and open communication.
