A fresh controversy has surfaced in the United States after reports of an alleged H1B visa scam targeting F1 students created panic among the Indian student community.
According to reports, several international students who were working on OPT were approached by companies promising guaranteed H1B sponsorship. However, once the offer was made, students were allegedly asked to pay large sums of money upfront to process the visa.
The companies reportedly demanded that students cover filing charges and legal fees amounting to thousands of dollars, while also forcing them to use a specific private attorney. Immigration experts have clearly stated that US law does not allow employers to shift mandatory H1B filing costs onto employees. Any such demand is considered illegal and exploitative.
Many students, worried about their visa status and limited job options, fell into the trap believing it was their only chance to stay back in the US. Legal experts warn that agreeing to such arrangements can lead to serious consequences, including visa rejection, future immigration bans, or even deportation.
Student associations are now urging F1 students to be extremely cautious and verify employers before agreeing to any sponsorship. They are also advising students to report such practices to authorities. As scrutiny on visa misuse increases, this incident highlights how vulnerable international students continue to be within the US immigration system.
