Due to the conflict, the supply of important raw materials has become difficult. This is creating problems for manufacturers and may lead to a shortage and price increase.
Why Condoms Shortage?
Major companies like HLL Lifecare and Mankind Pharma have shared their concerns. They said that silicone oil, which is used for lubrication in condoms, is becoming hard to get. Without this oil, the production process becomes difficult.
Another important material is ammonia. It is used to treat rubber and make condoms strong so they do not tear easily. However, the price of ammonia has increased by 40 to 50 percent. This sharp rise is mainly because India depends heavily on imports.
Around 86 percent of ammonia is imported from Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman. Due to the war, shipping routes have been affected, especially through the Strait of Hormuz. This has caused delays and supply shortages.
In addition, packaging materials like aluminium foil and plastic are also facing supply issues. All these factors are increasing the overall cost of production.
Because of this situation, condom prices are likely to go up in the coming days. India has a large condom market, and any price increase can affect many people.
Doctors are also worried about the impact. If prices rise, people may avoid buying condoms. This can lead to serious problems like an increase in population and the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
