By: Tupaki Desk | 13 Feb 2025 12:17 PM ISTIn the district of Kottayam, an alarming incident of ragging at the Government Nursing College has come to light, leading to the arrest of five third-year students. These individuals, identified as Samuel Johnson, NS Jeeva, KP Rahul Raj, C Rijil Jith, and Vivek NP, stand accused of inflicting both physical and psychological harm on their juniors. Despite their medical training, which should have instilled in them an acute awareness of the trauma associated with injuries, these students allegedly engaged in acts of cruelty that included cutting their juniors' bodies and applying lotion to the wounds, further aggravating their pain.
The situation escalated as the victims reported being subjected to dehumanizing treatment, where they were stripped, had dumbbells hung from their private parts, and suffered injuries inflicted with stationary items like compasses. Beyond the physical abuse, the seniors imposed a financial burden on their juniors, extorting Rs 800 for purchasing liquor and covering personal expenses. Adding to the intimidation, the perpetrators recorded the victims while forcing them to consume alcohol, threatening to publicize the footage if the incidents were disclosed.
Following a complaint lodged by the affected students at the Gandhinagar police station, swift action was taken against the accused. Their reprehensible behavior, which blatantly contradicts the ethos expected of future healthcare professionals, has led to their suspension from the college. The principal in charge, Dr. Lini Joseph, expressed disappointment over the failure to inform the college authorities sooner about the ongoing ragging. In response, she announced the formation of a special committee to further investigate the matter and determine additional actions to be taken, emphasizing the institution's commitment to upholding a safe and respectful environment for all students.
The distressing events at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam serve as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of ragging within educational institutions. Despite stringent laws against such practices, the persistence of these acts highlights the need for stronger enforcement and preventive measures. As the investigation continues, the college's initiative to address the situation and the legal proceedings against the accused will be closely monitored, hopefully leading to a resolution that deters future occurrences of such deplorable behavior.
