Hyderabad is one of the first developing metropolitan city in India, but there is this crucial problem with the drainage system here, which has been a root cause of several concerns. The same was on display last night while the city was hit by flash floods due to torrential rains.

Hyderabad witnessed heavy rainfall on Thursday night, causing significant disruption across the city. The downpour, which began around 8 PM, continued late into the night, leading to waterlogging in several key areas including Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, and LB Nagar. Roads quickly turned into streams, severely affecting traffic flow and stranding commuters for hours.

Several low-lying areas were inundated, forcing residents to remain indoors. GHMC emergency teams were deployed to clear clogged drains and pump out stagnant water. In some places, vehicles were seen submerged up to the windows, and many motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles on flooded roads.

Social media was flooded with visuals of overflowing nalas, fallen trees, and delayed cab services. Despite the chaos, no major casualties were reported. The IMD had issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad, warning of more rain over the weekend.

With extreme urbanisation and poor city planning flooding has been a major cause of concern in recent years, and it has to be seen how the government would deal with the situation.

Chief minister Revanth Reddy Came up with a comprehensive solution in the form of restoring the rivers through HYDRAA and it has to be seen if this would prove effective.
