ICC Chairman Jay Shah has issued a strong reminder to cricket boards after the controversy involving boycott threats before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Before the tournament began, the Bangladesh Cricket Board refused to travel to India citing security concerns. As a result, Bangladesh pulled out of the event and was replaced by another team.
The situation became more complicated when the Pakistan Cricket Board threatened to boycott its high profile match against India national cricket team in support of Bangladesh. However, after discussions with the International Cricket Council, Pakistan later reversed its decision and agreed to play the match.
Reacting to the controversy, Jay Shah said that no country or team is bigger than the ICC and that global tournaments are built collectively by all participating teams. He stressed that the authority of the governing body must be respected and that unilateral boycott threats cannot dictate how international tournaments are conducted.
Despite the early tensions, the tournament went ahead successfully and reportedly broke several viewership and broadcast records worldwide.
Shah’s remarks are being seen as a clear message that international cricket events will continue according to ICC rules, regardless of political or administrative disputes raised by individual cricket boards.
