The kind of restrictions that are being placed on visa issuance and also revenue streams is creating panic amongst the Indian student community.
However, amidst all the bad things that have been happening for the Indian and also international student community, there is some sort of a positive update now.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reversed its decision to terminate the legal status of over 1,200 international students. Earlier, ICE had deactivated student records in the SEVIS system, often without informing students or universities, leaving many at risk of deportation for minor or dismissed charges.
After facing heavy backlash, legal challenges, and emergency court orders from 23 states, ICE announced it would restore the affected students’ active status and temporarily halt terminations based on National Crime Information Center (NCIC) alerts alone.
The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that ICE is now working on new policies to ensure clearer, fairer processes for future SEVIS record changes. While the reversal has brought major relief to thousands of students, especially from countries like India, concerns remain about visa revocations and overall protection for international students studying in the U.S.
