As we had reported earlier, nearly 40% of the Indian population and coincidentally, also the Hyderabad population suffers from fatty liver. Now let us have a look into the detailed report regarding the same, and also how this can be controlled at an individual capacity.

A growing health concern is emerging in India, with nearly four in ten adults affected by fatty liver disease, according to a new study published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia.

The research points to a sharp rise in cases of metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease, commonly known as MASLD, a condition primarily linked to obesity, diabetes, poor diet, and sedentary lifestyles rather than alcohol consumption.

The study estimates that around 39 to 40 percent of Indian adults are now living with MASLD, making it one of the most widespread yet underdiagnosed health issues in the country. Experts warn that if left untreated, fatty liver disease can progress to severe liver damage, inflammation, cirrhosis, and even liver failure.

The increase is being driven largely by urban lifestyles, rising junk food consumption, lack of physical activity, and growing rates of metabolic disorders.

However, doctors emphasize that fatty liver disease is largely reversible, especially when detected early. The most effective way to manage and even cure the condition is through consistent lifestyle changes. Losing about 7 to 10 percent of body weight has been shown to significantly reduce liver fat.

A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats while cutting down on sugar, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates can help restore liver health.

Regular exercise, at least 30 to 45 minutes of brisk walking or moderate activity most days of the week, plays a crucial role. Managing blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure is equally important. Doctors also recommend routine health screenings so the condition can be identified before complications develop, reinforcing that early action can prevent long term damage.
