It is already known that India is the biggest democratic nation in the world and it is also the most populous country. In accordance with this, the volume of the population using social media is also enormous in India.

Now, a parliamentary committee has urged the Parliament of India to consider mandatory KYC based verification for users across social media, dating, and online gaming platforms operating in the country.

The panel said the growing number of cybercrimes, online frauds, impersonation cases, harassment incidents, and crimes involving minors are often linked to anonymous or fake accounts that are difficult to trace.

Members noted that many platforms currently allow users to sign up with minimal identity checks, which creates serious challenges for law enforcement agencies during investigations. In several recent cases, authorities struggled to identify offenders because accounts were created using false information, disposable emails, or virtual numbers.

The committee recommended that platforms adopt verification methods similar to banking and telecom standards, where users submit government approved identity documents before accessing services. This, the panel believes, will deter misuse, reduce fake profiles, and improve accountability across digital platforms.

At the same time, the panel emphasized that user privacy must be protected and that platforms should securely store personal data without misuse. It also suggested clear rules on how verified data can be accessed by authorities during legal investigations.

If implemented, this proposal could significantly change how Indians access social and interactive digital platforms in the future.
