In the wake of several cricket legends announcing their exit from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following the Champions Trophy, speculation is rife about who from the Indian cricket team might join the retirement list. With cricket giants like Steve Smith, Mushfiqur Rahim, and England's captain Jos Buttler stepping down, eyes are now on Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who have already exited the T20 format post the last T20 World Cup. Reports suggest that Rohit Sharma may consider retirement after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to be held in the ODI format, though official confirmation is pending until the tournament's conclusion.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hinted at potential changes to the central contracts, reflecting the evolving landscape of Indian cricket as players evaluate their careers. According to BCCI sources, discussions about Rohit Sharma's future, especially concerning his captaincy, are underway. "Rohit Sharma believes he still has the ability to play cricket. He has already been told to inform about his future plans. Retirement is his decision. But, there is a discussion going on about continuing as captain. Rohit himself understands how important a stable captain is to prepare the team for the next ODI World Cup," BCCI sources revealed. The board has also engaged with Virat Kohli, although no concerns have arisen from these discussions. The fate of Rohit's career and his role within the team remain a focal point of speculation until the Champions Trophy's end.

The BCCI's considerations extend to the A+ grade contracts awarded to players excelling across all three formats. With India's top players retiring from T20s, and potentially from ODIs next, a reevaluation of the grading system seems inevitable. "If [Rohit] leans towards retirement, the board will consider what to do next. Similarly, there is a possibility of taking action regarding the central contracts," the BCCI sources added, indicating a forthcoming shift in how player contributions are valued and rewarded. As the cricket world awaits decisions from its Indian veterans, the impact on team dynamics and the central contract system underscores the significant transitions underway in the sport.
