By: Tupaki Desk | 7 March 2026 10:45 AM ISTIt is already known that the Indian government has imposed ban on TRP ratings amongst news channels for 4 weeks and now let’s have a look into the story behind the same. A new directive from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has sparked debate in the media industry after the government asked Broadcast Audience Research Council to temporarily stop publishing Television Rating Points for news channels for four weeks.
The move is aimed at reducing sensational coverage and speculative reporting on sensitive global issues. According to the directive, authorities observed that some television channels were broadcasting highly dramatic and speculative content related to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving the United States and Iran.
Officials warned that such reporting could create unnecessary panic among viewers, especially those with relatives or connections in affected regions. TRP ratings are a key metric used to measure television viewership in India and determine advertising revenue for news channels. Because higher TRPs often translate into greater ad income, critics argue that some channels resort to exaggerated debates, sensational visuals, and unverified claims to attract viewers.
By suspending the weekly TRP data for a month, the government hopes to discourage the intense competition among channels that often drives sensationalism. Without ratings being published, broadcasters may focus more on responsible reporting instead of chasing viewership numbers.
However, media analysts say the move also raises questions about transparency and how news channels will measure audience engagement during this period. The temporary suspension is expected to remain in place for four weeks or until further instructions are issued by the government.
