In a tragic event that underscores the perils of unauthorized immigration routes, a young Indian man, Gurpreet, aged 33, lost his life due to a heart attack while trying to enter the United States. This unfortunate incident occurred in Guatemala, highlighting the risks associated with the so-called ‘Dunki’ route, a path often taken by those attempting to bypass legal entry points into the US. Gurpreet's journey began three months prior to his death, starting from his home country and leading him through a hazardous trek across several nations.

The family of the deceased revealed to the media that Gurpreet had embarked on this perilous journey with the assistance of an agent from Chandigarh, identified as Balweender Singh, to whom he had paid a sum of Rs 16.5 lakh. His odyssey took him first to Guyana, where he met with a Pakistani agent who further facilitated his travel through the dense forests of Panama to Colombia, alongside others aiming for the same destination. Despite the inherent dangers, Gurpreet and his companions pressed on, driven by the hope of a new life in the United States.

However, the family's hope turned to despair when they received a distressing call from Gurpreet, informing them he was staying at a hotel in Guatemala. The situation took a grave turn shortly thereafter, with the agent in charge of Gurpreet's passage informing the family about his critical condition and subsequent breathing difficulties. The news of Gurpreet's demise was a devastating blow, confirmed by his brother, Tara Singh, who has since been seeking governmental assistance to repatriate Gurpreet's remains back to India.

In light of this heart-wrenching event, Punjab minister Kuldeep Singh Daliwal met with Gurpreet's grieving family, offering his condolences. Minister Daliwal emphasized the importance of adhering to legal migration channels and cautioned against the use of unauthorized routes such as the Dunki path. His sentiments reflect the broader concerns about the hazards of illegal immigration, especially in the context of the strict immigration policies implemented by the Trump administration, which had previously expedited the deportation of 104 Indian nationals via a military aircraft shortly after taking office.

This incident not only casts a spotlight on the dangerous journeys undertaken by individuals in pursuit of a better life but also serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost associated with illegal immigration. The loss of Gurpreet is a tragic testament to the desperation and risks faced by many who embark on such perilous paths, underscoring the need for a compassionate and comprehensive approach to immigration policy.
