Trump Social Media Rule: Indians Safe For Now?
The rule is meant for visitors from countries that are part of the United States Visa Waiver Program.
By: Tupaki Desk | 11 Dec 2025 10:53 AM ISTDonald Trump has been making it extremely tough for international folk to enter the U.S. as his proposed five years social media rule has created confusion among international travelers, but Indian tourists remain unaffected.
The rule is meant for visitors from countries that are part of the United States Visa Waiver Program. Since India is not included in that program, Indian passport holders who apply through the regular tourist visa process do not need to provide five years of social media history.
This new rule focuses on tightening security for travelers who can enter the United States without a visa. These visitors may be asked for older phone numbers, email addresses and online activity records. Indian travelers already undergo the standard visa interview and background verification, so the additional requirement does not apply to them.
However, Indian applicants are currently dealing with other challenges such as longer visa processing times, increased scrutiny and more documentation. These issues are separate from the five years rule and are part of broader changes in US visa procedures. In simple terms, the new policy does not target Indian tourists. Their existing visa process stays the same, and they do not face extra social media history checks under the proposed rule.
