Maldives used to be the preferred tourist destination for Indians and Indian tourists had a major share in the income the South Asian country gets from tourism. Even celebrities used to visit the Maldives for a vacation or occasion. But everything went for a toss and Maldives is facing severe heat.

The new year saw the toes between India and Maldives getting affected. Earlier in January Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep and posted a few pictures and videos of his visit. An unexpected response came from Maldives as a few Ministers made objectionable posts on Modi.

Adding fuel to this, Indians changed their mind about visiting Maldives. The bookings were canceled and tourists started thinking about Lakshadweep. Maldives is heavily dependent on tourism and Indians not visiting it left a big impact.

Having learned its mistake, Maldives is said to be busy correcting it. It is said that the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) met the Indian High Commissioner for key discussions. On top of this, the body will also plan a few activities.

If we have to take anything from the media reports then we might see road shows and other events in major Indian cities by Maldives. The main motto behind the motto is restoring ties with India and Indians.

It is not that only Indians visit Maldives. People from other countries also visit there but the numbers are not on par with Indians. This tells us the importance Indians have in boosting travel tourism.

With this Maldives wants to restore the ties and attract the tourists again. Now we have to wait and see how the Indian tourists would respond to this. Considering what had happened earlier it might not be that easy.

After Indians decided not to travel to Maldives, the Boycott Maldives hashtag came on trending and even the shootings were also stopped as the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) urged the makers to not shoot in Maldives.

Things started getting out of hand ever since Mohamed Muizzu became Maldives president. He is dubbed as pro-China. On top of this, he had urged the Indian troops to leave the country.
