By: Tupaki Desk | 23 Feb 2026 9:16 AM ISTIndia has been one of the strong favourites to win the ongoing T20 World Cup, but the performance last night against South Africa has been very pathetic. India ended up losing the game to South Africa by a massive merchant of 76 runs.
In a surprising and heavy defeat at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight match, South Africa beat India by 76 runs ending the defending champions’ unbeaten run in T20 World Cup matches.
South Africa posted a competitive total of 187 for 7 after choosing to bat first. David Miller scored a quick 63, well supported by Dewald Brevis (45) and Tristan Stubbs (44 not out), giving the Proteas a solid platform.
In reply, India’s batting line-up collapsed under pressure, being bowled out for just 111 in 18.5 overs. Shivam Dube was the top Indian scorer with 42, but the rest of the batting order failed to build partnerships. South African bowlers Marco Jansen (4 / 22) and Keshav Maharaj (3 / 24) were particularly effective.
The margin of defeat marked India’s biggest loss by runs in T20 World Cup history and snapped their 12-match winning streak in the tournament. After the game, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav promised the team would bounce back stronger, reflecting on a disappointing night but keeping hopes alive for the remaining Group matches.
This setback means India now faces added pressure in their upcoming Super Eight games to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
