One of the leading employers in India, Infosys has mandate a new regulation to all of its employees and here is a look into the same. Infosys has sparked a fresh debate after asking its workforce of over three lakh employees to share details about the electricity they consume at home while working remotely.

The move is part of the company’s wider sustainability effort as hybrid work becomes a long term reality. With employees spending a significant number of working days at home every month, Infosys says its carbon footprint is no longer limited to office campuses alone.

According to reports, the company has circulated an internal survey seeking information on power usage linked to work from home activities. This includes electricity consumed by laptops, lighting, fans, air conditioners and other household appliances used during office hours.

Employees are also being asked whether their homes use renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar and what energy saving practices they follow.

Infosys has clarified that the data collection is meant for overall environmental assessment and emissions reporting and not for tracking or evaluating individuals. The company believes accurate data will help it calculate indirect emissions more precisely and plan better carbon offset strategies.

The initiative has drawn mixed reactions from employees and industry observers. While some see it as a progressive step towards climate accountability, others have raised concerns around privacy and the growing overlap between professional responsibilities and personal space. The development highlights how corporate sustainability goals are increasingly extending beyond office walls in the era of hybrid work.
