By: Tupaki Desk | 4 July 2026 4:02 PM ISTIt is already known that Instagram is the most used social media platform in India with its footprint reaching almost every remote corner of the country. However, something extremely detrimental is being established against Instagram now and let us have a look into the story.
A BBC undercover investigation has found that Instagram in India is running ads promoting child s*xual abuse material and making money from these ads. Some of the ads feature children who appear to be as young as seven or eight and link out to content on the messaging app Telegram.
This has already started to have a repercussion on the leading social media platform in the Indian market as the authorities have started to take action on the same.
After the BBC found that Instagram was running paid advertisements promoting child abuse material in India, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed MeitY to summon Meta and explain how this was even possible.
Meta says every ad goes through a review process before it's approved. Yet according to the BBC, ads containing terms like r*pe video and child video" were allegedly approved, served to users, and linked directly to Telegram channels selling the material for as little as ₹99.
It is extremely shocking to see something like this happen with such a big social media platform that has a humongous following in the Indian subcontinent.
It is the responsibility of the Indian government and the authorities to ensure that such activities do not repeat in the future by imposing a strict punishment to Instagram now.
