Canada has decided to make it tougher for international students to come and study in the country. They increased the amount of money students need to have if they want to apply for a study permit. If the provinces and schools don't take the right actions before the next fall term, Canada will reduce the number of visas they give out.

Also, international students can now work for more than 20 hours a week off-campus until April 30, 2024, as the government has extended this permission.

Canada's Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, expressed concerns about some schools that are just focused on giving out diplomas without providing a proper learning experience. He warned about fraud and misuse within the education system.

The government wants to protect international students from being exploited or facing problems. If the provinces don't fix these issues, the federal government is ready to step in and take action.

The financial requirement for prospective students will be increased to $20,635, which is double the previous amount. This change is to make sure students can afford living expenses, travel, and tuition fees. The government will adjust this amount every year based on the cost of living in Canada.

Miller also emphasized the need for schools to be careful about how many international students they accept, considering if they can provide housing or help students find a place to live off-campus.

This decision aims to help international students avoid challenges in finding good housing and being forced into bad jobs, as reported by CBC.
