By: Tupaki Desk | 14 Jan 2026 9:28 AM ISTIran is undergoing one of its major public outbreaks in recent years and the consequences are pretty significant this time around. The government is doing everything in its power to overcome the same and abusing power to make it all happen.
According to several media reports and opposition linked sources, Iran witnessed an extremely violent crackdown on protests that allegedly led to the deaths of nearly 12000 people within a matter of days.
These reports claim that security forces responded with overwhelming force as demonstrations spread rapidly across multiple cities, triggered by public anger over political repression, economic hardship and lack of freedoms.
The reports state that elite units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps along with Basij forces were deployed to suppress protesters.
Live ammunition, mass arrests and aggressive raids were reportedly used to dismantle protest hubs. Many of the alleged killings are said to have occurred during night operations, when security forces moved into residential areas to prevent crowds from regrouping.
Media accounts further claim that authorities imposed a near total internet blackout during the crackdown. This restricted real time information flow and made independent verification extremely difficult, allowing the violence to continue largely unseen by the outside world. Families of victims were allegedly warned not to speak to the media, while bodies were said to be buried quietly to avoid public attention.
While the Iranian government has strongly denied these numbers and released much lower official death counts, the media reports continue to circulate widely, fueling international concern and condemnation. Human rights groups have called for independent investigations, stating that the scale of violence described, if accurate, would represent one of the deadliest protest crackdowns in recent history.
