The In vitro fertilization (IVF) centres are a boon to such couples helping them to enjoy parenthood. Accuracy in the process is one of the major USPs of the industry. However, the industry pulled off a major mess.
As per the media reports, there was a big mix-up of the samples at an IVF centre leading to a big confusion on the identity. Due to this, it became tough to trace the details of the donors. With no option left, the organisers came up with a big decision.
This shocking incident happened in Australia in Queensland. The state has a massive IVF industry where the samples are stored. However, there was a big mix-up of samples which led to confusion on the identity. There is a misidentification of the samples and around half the samples lost the identification.
Due to this, 1000s of samples in the IVF industry might be destroyed. There were no labels on the samples at the centre. A sensational report had shed light on the irregularities and no tracking of the samples.
An audit found that around half the samples at the centre were mishandled. Precisely 42 percent of samples were mishandled. In what could be a big shock to donors and parents there was a misidentification of the samples.
Usually, the samples have labels with the details of the donors for easy tracking. But the IVF industry in Queensland is dealing with many issues and its self-regulatory nature might be seen as a big reason.
The rise of the IVF industry in Australia is largely because of infertility issues in people. It is said that one in every six Australian couples has this problem. Despite this, there was a massive mix-up of samples.
