This earthquake is now recorded as the 8th largest earthquake ever shaking the earth at a depth of 19.3 kilometers, approximately 125 kilometers away from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This earthquake is the strongest to hit the region since the 1952 9.0 magnitude earthquake.
The Kamchatka Peninsula lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent volcanic eruptions and seismic activity. As a result, the region is a seismic hotspot and large earthquakes are not uncommon. The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings for countries across the Pacific Ocean including Russia, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, California, the Philippines, Indonesia, Ecuador and Chile.
Tsunami Effects and Warnings:
In the aftermath of the earthquake, several areas reported tsunami waves. In Kamchatka, waves up to 3-4 meters high were observed. Other countries, like Japan, recorded smaller waves of around 30-50 centimeters. Tsunami warnings were issued in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines, but fortunately, no significant damage was reported. Coastal evacuations caused some disruptions, including traffic jams and movement of people to higher ground.
Damage and Casualties:
In Russia, several buildings were affected by the quake, including a kindergarten in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. While there were no reported fatalities, a few injuries occurred when people rushed out of buildings or airports. There were no major casualties reported in Japan, and Hawaii also remained largely unaffected.
Aftershocks and Future Risks:
The earthquake was followed by aftershocks of 6.9 and 6.3 magnitudes. Experts warn of potential stronger aftershocks in the coming days, and there is a risk of further seismic activity. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious and prepared for any additional shocks.
