Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed, according to multiple official reports. State media in Iran confirmed on Sunday that Khamenei, the country’s most powerful leader for more than three decades, died after joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel hit his compound in Tehran early on Saturday.
Khamenei was 86 years old and had ruled Iran since 1989. The government announced 40 days of national mourning and seven days of public holiday after his death. It also said several of his close family members, including his daughter and grandson, were killed in the same strikes.
US President Donald Trump publicly confirmed Khamenei’s death and called it a chance for positive change in Iran. Israeli leaders also said the strikes had successfully targeted Iran’s leadership.
Iran’s military forces have vowed to respond strongly, warning of severe retaliation against American and Israeli targets. The death of Khamenei marks a major turning point in Middle East politics, raising fears of wider conflict and uncertainty over who will lead Iran next.
