In a tightly controlled electoral exercise, Kim Jong-un has once again secured an overwhelming mandate in North Korea’s latest parliamentary elections, with official results showing 99.93 percent approval for state-backed candidates.
The elections, held on March 15, 2026, were conducted to choose 687 members of the Supreme People’s Assembly, the country’s legislature. According to state media, voter turnout stood at an extraordinary 99.99 percent, reflecting what authorities described as strong public support for the ruling system.
However, international observers continue to question the credibility of the process. In North Korea, each constituency features only one pre-approved candidate, leaving voters with the limited choice of either endorsing or rejecting that individual.
This structure effectively eliminates electoral competition and ensures near-unanimous outcomes. Interestingly, the latest results revealed that 0.07 percent of voters rejected the candidates, marking a rare instance of recorded dissent. Reports suggest that such opposing votes had not been officially acknowledged in decades, making this a notable, though extremely small, deviation.
The results have triggered widespread discussion online, with many questioning who the small fraction of dissenting voters might be, given the country’s strict political environment.
