We are witnessing a very peculiar situation across the globe as new kinds of diseases and abnormalities are being witnessed on a regular basis these days.

A common infection known as mononucleosis, or “mono,” is being taken too lightly by many people, according to a new study, which warns it could trigger a serious and potentially life threatening condition.

Mono typically presents with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and sore throat, and spreads through kissing, sharing drinks, or coughing. Because of how easily it transmits through close contact, it is commonly referred to as the “kissing disease.”

A study published in the journal Neurology Open Access has found that ignoring or neglecting a mono infection could significantly increase the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, a chronic and debilitating neurological disorder.

MS causes damage to the brain and nerves, leading to long term complications that can severely affect a person’s quality of life. Researchers are urging people not to dismiss mono as a mild illness. While many recover without serious complications, the potential link to MS makes timely treatment and proper rest essential.

People experiencing prolonged fatigue, persistent sore throat, or swollen glands are advised to consult a doctor rather than self medicate or wait for symptoms to resolve on their own.

Medical experts say awareness about the long term risks of mono is low, particularly among younger populations who are most commonly affected. Early diagnosis and care remain the best way to prevent complications.
