The changes in currency values and other aspects play a key role. The vast population size we have is also a vital factor in this. This is the reason why India has the tag of a third-world country.
But all this is past and a lot of changes happened. India is slowly coming out of poverty. Compared to a few decades before the poverty percentage came down massively. This is not what the government is saying but a global body said this.
As per the observations of the World Poverty Clock, the poor are less than 4 crores in the country. Given the population size of India, the count of poverty is very small. This can be seen as good news and an achievement for the country.
The World Poverty Clock said that there are just 3.4 crore extremely poor in the country which translates to just 3 percent. Over the years the poverty size has been coming down. Compared to the last two years, poverty size came down.
The data said that in 2023 there were around 4 crore people who are extremely poor. Cut to 2024 the percentage even came down. Talking about the division, around 94 percent of them are from rural areas while the rest of them are from urban areas.
Looking at the parameter of the report, Purchasing power parity (PPP) was considered. Those who have a daily purchasing power of $1.9(Rs 158) are less than 3 percent. The report said that poverty has been coming down. Compared to 2022, it reduced in 2023 which saw a dip further in 2024.
