In a significant diplomatic victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured the release of Indian nationals fighting in the Russian army against Ukraine. During his recent visit to Moscow, PM Modi raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin, who agreed to discharge and facilitate the return of all Indian citizens serving in the Russian military.

The matter had been a major concern for the Indian government, with at least two Indian citizens losing their lives while fighting in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Many others stuck in the war zone allege they were deceived into joining the combat. Reports suggest that up to 200 Indian nationals were recruited by the Russian military to serve as support staff, such as cooks and helpers, with the actual number estimated to be around 100.

PM Modi made securing the discharge of Indian citizens who were 'misled' into fighting in the Ukraine war one of his top priorities during his Moscow visit. He raised the issue with President Putin during their private dinner meeting on Monday. The opposition, particularly the Congress party, had also questioned the government's stance on the matter, with MP Jairam Ramesh asking if PM Modi would take up the cause of these youth and ensure their safe return to India.

The release of Indian nationals from the Russian army is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement for India, which has been treading a fine line between maintaining its longstanding relationship with Moscow and courting closer Western security ties. The move also highlights the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, even in complex geopolitical situations.
