India is the biggest consumer of social media in the world, and this is largely due to the volume of the population that is present here. This is one of the principal by leading social platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram fight to dominate the Indian market.

In this context, the Indian government had been largely censorious when it comes to the kind of content that is being shared in Indian social media space.

In view of the recent protest that happened in Delhi, where students demanded the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan the Indian authorities were agitated about this. It reached a point where the Indian authorities started to pressurise the social media platforms for creating certain algorithms.

Incidentally, this topic came hardly against Meta, which is the parent organisation for leading platforms like Facebook and Instagram. So now the Indian authorities have started to crack down heavily on the Meta leadership.

IT panel Chairperson Nishikant Dubey demanded a personal apology from Mark Zuckerberg and said Meta's safe harbour protection should be withdrawn if he refuses.

He also accused Meta, YouTube and X of failing to adequately tackle harmful content and opaque algorithms. Top Meta executives appeared before Parliament's IT panel on Monday after Facebook briefly removed PM Modi's video.

But considering that Mark is already one of the most influential personalities in the world, it has to be seen if he would actually take the occasion to apologise to Modi on this matter. This looks like a long shot for now.

It needs to be noted that the Indian government had also been cracking down on Twitter for the kind of social media narratives that are being set there. Now they have come down heavily on Meta and have demanded the apology of Mark Zuckerberg himself.
