The United States has increased its scrutiny of social media activity for students applying for F1, M, and J category visas. The US Embassy in India recently explained that every applicant must list all social media usernames used in the past five years in the DS 160 form.
This includes platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, Reddit, and others. The embassy also advised applicants to keep their accounts public during the visa review period so that officers can verify the information easily.
If a student forgets to mention even one account, or if the information appears incomplete, the visa can be delayed or denied. In some situations, it may even affect future visa eligibility.
There have already been real cases where students faced problems because they failed to mention a secondary account or did not keep a profile open to public view. One student reported that their visa was placed on hold because a Reddit account was not listed in the DS 160.
Many students have now started double checking their details to avoid mistakes. The message from the embassy is very clear. Be truthful, be transparent, and provide complete information about all your social media usage to avoid any issues during visa processing.
