2 wheeler tax backlash: How government reacted!

For a long time now the toll taxes on four wheeler vehicles in India has been one of the most debated topics. This is perhaps the reason why the National Highway Authority of India frequently modifies the pricing model based on the public reception.

In this context, a shocking report went viral on social media earlier in the day today. This was regarding the possible implementation of toll tax on two wheeler vehicles on national highways.

Shortly after this speculation gained traction on social media, there was a huge outburst from the public, and the matter became pretty serious very quickly. There were several roles and backlash posts against this directly targeting the central government.

However, the NHAI was rather quick to respond to these social media speculations as they issued public communication.

“Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. #NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.” The clarification from the NHAI read.

If at all the government had considered imposing toll tax on two wheelers, it would have been a major blunder and would have invited endless public criticism. So, the NHAI did the right thing by condemning the speculations before they do further damage to the concerned authorities.
