Miller, a 59-year-old convict found guilty of murdering three coworkers in 1999, was executed on Thursday using this experimental method. Nitrogen gas execution, which involves suffocating the convict by replacing oxygen with nitrogen, has become a hot topic in the United States. Miller's execution marks the second instance of this method being used in Alabama, following its first application earlier this year.
According to officials, the execution process began with a mask being placed over Miller's face, through which nitrogen gas was administered. Within two minutes, Miller collapsed, and his death was confirmed six minutes later. The entire procedure reportedly took eight minutes. The use of nitrogen gas, which is designed to cause death through hypoxia or oxygen deprivation, is presented as a more humane alternative to lethal injection, but it remains highly controversial.
The first nitrogen gas execution in Alabama took place in January 2023, when Kenneth Smith was put to death for his involvement in a murder case. However, Smith's execution stirred significant debate, as his lawyers and family members argued against the method, alleging that it caused unnecessary suffering. Despite legal challenges, the courts allowed the execution to proceed. This has led to ongoing discussions about the ethics and humaneness of nitrogen gas as a method of capital punishment, especially in comparison to traditional methods like lethal injection.
Miller's case dates back to 1999 when he was convicted of murdering three coworkers. Investigators determined that Miller, who was a delivery truck driver, shot and killed two of his coworkers at Fergusor Enterprises and later went to another office to kill a third employee. It was believed that Miller's actions stemmed from a belief that his coworkers were spreading rumors about him, leading to mental instability. In 2022, authorities attempted to execute Miller using a lethal injection, but due to his weight, they were unable to locate a suitable vein, leading to the eventual use of nitrogen gas as the chosen method for his death sentence.
