Maria Corina Machado was honored for her peaceful fight to restore democracy and protect human rights in Venezuela

The Norwegian Nobel Committee made it clear that their decision was completely independent and not influenced by lobbying or media campaigns.
Maria Corina Machado was honored for her peaceful fight to restore democracy and protect human rights in Venezuela, where authoritarian rule has caused great suffering.
As a former member of parliament and opposition leader, she has consistently raised her voice against military control and dictatorship. Despite facing threats, harassment, and even living in hiding for months, she never gave up her peaceful movement.
The Nobel Committee praised her “extraordinary courage and commitment” to achieving democracy through non-violence, calling her struggle an inspiration for democratic movements around the world.
Trump, on the other hand, had promoted his role in peace agreements between nations and believed he deserved the prize. Just hours before the announcement, a Russian representative also supported his nomination.
However, the Nobel Committee rejected all political pressure. Committee Secretary Christian Berg Harpviken stated clearly that “our decisions are entirely independent and not influenced by campaigns.”
Born on October 7, 1967, Machado entered politics in 2002. She has long been recognized for her dedication to democratic values and fearless leadership.
Her supporters affectionately call her the “Iron Lady of Venezuela.” In 2025, Time Magazine named her among the “100 Most Influential People in the World,” highlighting her global impact.
The award to Maria Corina Machado symbolizes international respect for those who fight for freedom and democracy through peaceful means, sending a strong message to the world that courage and integrity matter more than political power.
